I wouldn’t have thought of it, that’s for sure!Īs the movie stands, Jonny’s end is pretty random and hardly deserved, functioning mainly as a reminder of the show’s “life sucks” tone during an otherwise happy ending, but not really connecting to Jonny’s subplot or role in the series in any meaningful way. I know the show isn’t exactly consistent about it and drops him in water all the time with no consequences, but his swelling has been mentioned at least twice and it’s just the sort of detail that makes his existence as a board so much more real. I’m not sure what I like most about Plank’s personality, I find him hard to pin down, but I love that they gave Plank a weakness with water causing him to swell up. My favorite application of this trait is the running gag of Jonny hating the Kankers and being able to take them on in a fight, whether they attack him individually or gang up on him. There’s a certain randomness to the three appearances of Captain Melonhead (‘Robbin Ed’, ‘Scam of the Century’ for the DS, and ‘Big Picture Show’), the persona never really feels that specific to his character, maybe because there’s so little evidence that Jonny would have an interest in comic books, and yet it actually has plenty of foreshadowing… It started small, with Jonny being put into action scenarios like tearing the Kankers’ sail in ‘Avast Ye Eds’ or performing acrobatics to save Plank in ‘Gimme Gimme Never Ed’, and then season 4 teases the concept with Jonny playing a Super Plank game in ‘For The Ed, By The Ed’, just a few episodes prior to Melonhead’s debut. I love Jonny’s heroism! It’s interesting to me how often it comes up without actually being addressed as a central part of his personality. Since we get that easter egg of Baby Jonny and also see Jonny’s driveway, it implies his house was in fact built. Rolf’s house is given no evidence, but his driveway isn’t there yet and the anon house next to his seems to be the busiest of the 3 visible construction zones, so I would assume Rolf’s house had not yet been built. The scene confirms that by the time Bro left/Edd moved in, the houses that were built were Ed’s, Edd’s, Eddy’s, Nazz’s, Kevin’s and the anon house next to Kevin’s, while the unbuilt houses were Jimmy’s, the anon house between Ed and Eddy, and the anon house between Edd and Rolf. Jonny’s parents would be the first to move in after Eddy and Ed’s, so they would also get to know Bro a little, and in an unusual twist for my concept of Bro, he would actually bond with them a little and mesh well with their hippy ways.īarely related fun fact because I’ve studied the hell out of the Baby Eds scene in ‘Every Which Way But Ed’: The only houses we never see in that whole scene are Jonny’s and Rolf’s. From there, I wanted Jonny’s parents to have a big hand in how word about the new houses in the cul-de-sac gets spread to the other kids’ parents. In Bro Show, I was going to have his parents work with Kevin’s dad in the peach orchard before he gets his jawbreaker factory job. One of my headcanons is that Jonny and Plank used to be part of Eddy’s scamming crew, since it seems they were around before Edd, and because we don’t even know when Edd went from pigeon to scammer and officially made Eddy’s group “the Eds.” Just another way I like to reinforce the idea that Ed and Eddy used to be close with Jonny, and it even factors a little into my sense that there’s some unease between Jonny and Edd.Ī related headcanon I have is that Jonny’s parents are the most connected to the other adults in the show.
